Tatianna Kern was a contestant during Cycle 14 of ANTM.
This 21-year old student from Ewa Beach, Hawaii was a contestant in 2009’s Miss Hawaii USA pageant prior to her appearance on America’s Next Top Model.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, she revealed to the judges that she has been volunteering as a mortician, performing cremations and embalming when necessary. When asked why, she told them that in the 10th grade, her brother tested HIV positive. She volunteered as a mortician in the hopes that her volunteer work would be a catalyst into research that would help in curing AIDS. During episode 5, Tatianna expressed that she dropped out of school to participate in the show. (Currently, she’s in her last semester in school; she graduates in May 2010).
During her initial interview, Tyra also wanted to know why Tatianna wanted to become a model. Her answer was simply, “I wanted to check out this reality; I’ve been in the science world for so long.” This answer did not sit well with the judges; they didn’t know whether she was there “to check it out” or because she actually had a passion to model.
Tatianna did reasonably well in the first three episodes of America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 14. She was called 6th following Jonathan Mannion’s ‘nude shoot’, 4th following Brian Edwards’ ‘disappearing purfume’ shoot and 7th following the ‘dance’ photo shoot with Cade Martin. Tyra loved her final picture, but she commented that her film was not very good as a whole.
During episode 4, Tatianna stepped up her game when she won the CoverGirl improv challenge in Times Square. She also produced an exceptional ‘vampire’ photo with Sarah Silver. Tyra said she loved her photo and that she was definitely “feeling it.” Tatianna was then called third during elimination, solidifying her place in the competition.
Episode 5 proved to be difficult for Tatianna, as she struggled to pose for her “fake” photo shoot with D-Nice. Tyra said that Tatianna confused her because her film was not consistent; she said that she couldn’t survive with one ‘lucky good’ shot per shoot. Due to her poor performance, Tatianna fell to the bottom two with Alexandra.
While addressing the bottom two, Tyra told Tatianna that her photo was not good; it was luck. She said that the judges didn’t know if Tatianna could get a good photo on purpose. In the end, Tatianna was chosen for elimination over Alexandra. She became the 5th girl eliminated from Cycle 14.
Upon saying good bye, Tyra said, “You are an anomoly; [you take] some of the prettiest pictures in the competition. But I don’t think you know how to get it yet. The judges are nervous that there’s going to be a week that comes where ‘luck’ won’t happen. The potential is there, but the skill is not there yet.”
During her exit interview, Tatianna said that she was disappointed in herself. She didn’t think she’d be the best every week, but at least she was getting experience each week. She said that after this experience, she just wants to get better.
