Lexie Tomchek for Reality News Online (Oct 2010)

October 17, 2010

In October of 2010, Reality News Online interviewed Cycle 15‘s Lexie Tomchek following her elimination and appearance on the show. Here is the text from the interview (written and posted by Phil Kural):

“I Was Simply Trying to Stay in the Competition” – RealityNewsOnline’s Exclusive Interview With America’s Next Top Model 15’s Lexie

Lexie (right) was the fifth girl eliminated this cycle of America’s Next Top Model when the judges felt that, although she had the personality, she just wasn’t living up to her potential. Did Lexie know her run was coming to an end? Was she focused too much on Kacey? Who did she feel gave her the kiss of death? Find out right here!

I’m the first to admit that Lexie wasn’t my favorite person this cycle, so I was sort of glad when she was eliminated. Then I got a chance to talk with her, and she gave one of the most fun interviews I’ve ever done! Funny, candid, and straight to the point, Lexie chatted with me about her time on the show, and where she would like to go from here. Oh, and more Kacey bashing!

RealityNewsOnline: Hey, Lexie! Thanks for taking time out of your day to chat with me. How much of previous cycles of the show had you seen and why did you decide to apply?

Lexie: I think I’ve seen parts of every cycle, but I’m not sure which I haven’t seen all the way through, other than cycle 13. The reason I auditioned… Well, I actually tried out for cycle 14 but I got into a car accident on the way there! The reason I went again was because I always wanted to model, and I wanted to be on TV as well, so I figured that this would be the best thing for me. I’m glad that things worked out the way they did though, since cycle 15 ended up being high fashion and cycle 14 was simply just cycle 14.

RNO: Last week we saw you as the original person to call Kacey out in front of the other girls. Looking back, do you regret doing that?

Lexie: Not at all. I understand that it doesn’t look the best for me, but the one thing that I wanted to be while in the house was myself. My mom actually left a note in my purse in the airport when I was leaving for the show, and it simply said that when I watch the show, make sure I can recognize myself. It didn’t look the best for my character, but that is me. If I have something to say behind your back I’ll tell you to your face. To sum it up, I didn’t just start with her. She asked me why I was giving her attitude, and I told her that I didn’t like her!

RNO: One of my rules for success on ANTM is to focus more on yourself than the other girls. Did you ever feel you were putting more energy into not liking Kacey than working on your own performance?

Lexie: No, not at all. It may have seemed that way, that I was focused on her, but I really wasn’t. My interviews always pertained to her because they always asked me questions about her! Really, it was just something to make the show more interesting, but she wasn’t my main issue the whole time that I was there. I definitely focused on myself as well.

RNO: Two weeks ago, you were in the bottom two with Sarah. What was your plan moving forward to not end up there again?

Lexie: I mean, it was just to take into consideration what the judges… and I guess Mr. Jay, were saying. Also, though, I think one thing that helped me was working with a photographer who I clicked with. Matthew Rolston and I worked really well together. I think I just can’t do well when someone is standing right there telling me that I can’t model and everything is wrong, and that is essentially what Jay does while you are having your shoot.

RNO: When it came to the competition, it seemed like your walk was your strongest asset. Is that what you felt was your biggest strength going into the house?

Lexie: No, and that is why it’s so funny! When Kacey and I didn’t actually hate one another, before we were in the house, she was telling me she has a great walk and is bad with photos and I told her that I’m great with photos and my walk is awful. It ended up being the total opposite for me! That’s okay though, since I love runway. I look at runway the same as when I used to do theater. There is just this rush you get that you can’t explain.

RNO: When you were standing in the bottom two with Jane did you feel like you were going to be staying or was it clear that you were going home?

Lexie: Oh, I knew during my photo shoot that I was going home. It’s really not in my character, but I gave up halfway through that shoot. Jay was just being mean to me at that point, and he didn’t like my styling. He pretty much told me that I was going home. Normally I give 100%, but everyone wanted to leave that photo shoot and I just jumped on the bandwagon too. I had nothing to do with my styling, and that was his biggest issue, but I had to pay the price.

RNO: I have to commend you on the makeover list – that had to be the best prank ever on the show. Do you feel you would have come clean about the list to the other girls had Tyra not asked at panel?

Lexie: Yes! Okay, I was the one who actually wanted to tell the other girls, and it was sweet and innocent Ann and Rhianna that wanted me to keep it a secret. Liz was a good friend of mine, and she is the one who took the list and ran with it. She asked me if I knew anything about it and I told her it was probably fake, but I promised the other girls I wouldn’t tell, so I was actually glad that Tyra made us confess to it at panel.

RNO: Ann has now received the best photo four times in a row – an ANTM record. Do you feel there was any resentment towards her for doing so well?

Lexie: I know there was definitely some resentment from Kacey, and maybe Kayla as well. However, I don’t want to speak for them. I know that I was really happy for her, since I knew that it was not plausible for me to get the first photo ever at that point. If it was, it was a HUGE long shot. I was simply trying to stay in the competition – I knew I was never getting my photo first. Ann is the only girl who could get her photo first so many times in a row and not let it go to her head, so I’m glad that it was her.

RNO: Do you feel that there was a turning point for you in the competition where things felt like they were steadily beginning to head south?

Lexie: (Laughs) I would say the first photo shoot. Here’s what happened. I got on the show and I was just thrilled to go to casting week. Then I get called for the house and I was happy for that. When I got there, I was talking to people on the phone who were allowed to know I was there and I told them that I felt like I really had a chance at winning. Then we had the first photo shoot and I was torn apart. I called them back and was like, “Umm, never mind!” Haha! When Jay doesn’t like you it’s the kiss of death, and he wasn’t a fan of mine from the beginning. I knew I wasn’t going to win, and pretty much just wanted to last as long as possible so that I could appreciate the experience.

RNO: Looking forward, what are you hoping to get out of appearing on the show, or do you not plan on using your ANTM experience on your resume?

Lexie: I’m really just going to see how it goes. After I’m done my interviews I’ll go to an agency here in Chicago and see if I could do some acting as well. I’ve heard that sometimes using the ANTM name in your resume isn’t the best, but I hear for acting it actually helps.

RNO: What is your plan once the show is finished airing and you are free to pursue your own career?

Lexie: Well, like I said, I would like to do both acting and modeling. Agencies actually book for both now, so that’s a plus. I love modeling, and I’m very comfortable doing it. There are some parts I don’t love though, and acting is something I know I’d be great at. I’d love to model my career after Cameron Diaz and pretty much do everything!

RNO: Now that you have been eliminated, is there anyone still in the competition who you are rooting for specifically?

Lexie: Oh, I’m definitely team Ann. She was one of my good friends in the house and she just has an amazing personality. I think she would be great for the job and she would definitely take advantage of the prizes and I really believe that she would make it big in the industry.

RNO:I have to ask – any intention on speaking with Kacey now that the competition has finished?

Lexie: Funny you should ask! Kacey has actually already reached out to me via my YouTube page and left me some nasty messages. I actually have no intention of ever speaking to her again, and once this is all over I’d like to forget who she is. I mean, why leave messages on my page, why not just make your own? I think it’s pretty safe to say we’ll never speak again.

RNO: Is there anything you would like to add or say to fans of the show?

Lexie: One thing that I definitely want to say is that I really and truly appreciate the fan support. Fans have reached out to me through so many different social networks and it has been awesome. It really has helped me through this whole thing and I appreciate it so much!

RNO: Thanks, Lexie!
